Save the Multitools!

The Flipper Zero helped popularize the idea of a pocket-sized electronics multitool, combining several tools that hardware hackers and security researchers might otherwise carry separately. But there is a lot more that can be squeezed into a handheld device, especially if you are willing to sacrifice a little pocket space. FREE-WILi 2 takes that approach, packing enough hardware into its enclosure to serve as something closer to a portable electronics lab.

Astrall Dynamics' Hypertron-T01 Is Hot Stuff — As It Puts Out Fires with Its Powerful Water Cannon

Advanced robotics specialist Astrall Dynamics has showcased two in-production quadrupedal robots, designed for inspection and heavy-duty operation respectively — and its firefighting Hypertron-T01 has won the IFA 2026 Next & Emerging Tech award for its trouble. "Industrial customers do not acquire robots for flashy showroom demonstrations," says Astrall Dynamics' Xinqi Yan of the company's designs, positioning them against rivals also present at IFA in Berlin and their kite-flying prototypes. "They need systems that can work reliably shift after shift, support existing field tools, and take over high-risk tasks to reduce human exposure to hazards.

The Smart Storage System That Counts Your Parts for You

Anyone who has spent time in a workshop knows the feeling. You need a particular resistor, screw, bearing, or connector, and the bin where it is supposed to be is either empty or nearly so. Maybe someone forgot to reorder it.

Turn Your NES Into a Live Flight Tracker

If you want to see what's going on in the sky over your neighborhood — or across the world — all you need to do is sit down at your computer and load a website to watch aircraft zip by. But many makers want a dedicated device that they can glance at whenever they like, so they build their own devices. These may be as simple as a Cheap Yellow Display with custom firmware, or much more elaborate like this system that projects air traffic on the ceiling.

Fixing the TCMalloc regression with RSEQ operations

The restartable sequences feature is one of the stranger corners of the kernel's user-space interface; it provides a way for user space to carry out simple lockless operations and be informed if it is preempted over the course of an operation (and must, thus, restart). 19 release to improve the performance of restartable sequences broke the TCMalloc allocator, which was relying on an undocumented (and unintended) kernel behavior. Now, Olivier Dion is proposing an addition to the restartable-sequences API that will bring TCMalloc back into the fold; it does not make the restartable-sequences API any less strange, though.

Kernel prepatch 7.3-rc2

3-rc2 kernel prepatch is out for testing. Linus said: This didn't *feel* like a particularly busy rc2, but it clearly was. rc2 is usually the quietest time when people take a breather after the merge window and it takes a while to start finding bugs.
