TasteVal: Measuring the Experimental Research Taste of AI Systems Against Human Experts

We introduce TasteVal, a benchmark to evaluate the experimental research taste of frontier models. We define research taste as the ability to pick interesting problems to solve, design experiments, and interpret experimental results. TasteVal measures the experimental component of research taste; given a fixed research problem, we measure how well a model iteratively designs experiments and draws conclusions from their outcomes. PlotGround: Grounding Plot Digitization in Real Scientific Figures and Their Source Data

Scientific figures often encode quantitative results that are not readily available in machine-readable form, making accurate plot digitization important for verifying and reusing published findings. Yet it remains unclear how accurately current models recover plotted values from real scientific figures, as existing benchmarks rely largely on synthetic charts or cover only a limited range of chart types. We introduce PlotGround, an automated pipeline for building plot digitization benchmarks from real scientific figures and their author-released source data. Authors: Yaohui Zhang, Binxu Li, Haoyi Duan.

Base Models Can Reason By Taking a Cue From Training Data

In this paper, we study how training data creates associations between the tokens at the start of a base model's response and the reasoning behavior that follows. First, we demonstrate that fixing particular starting token cues makes a base model's performance competitive with that of its reinforcement learning (RL)-trained counterparts on math and coding. \n\nOkay" raises Olmo-3-7B's MATH-500 pass@1 accuracy from 42% to 78%, while "Alright," raises Qwen3-14B's from 72% to 87%. Negotiating Ontological Boundaries in User-Authored Personal Sensing Systems

Designed artifacts are ontological, shaping, and at times limiting, what becomes possible or imaginable. One path toward mitigating such foreclosures is giving people power over how systems are designed and built. Despite decades of scholarship around systems that enable such authorship, these systems are often evaluated on whether or not they are usable, useful, or technically feasible, leaving questions of ontological boundary negotiation, unexamined.

MemPilot: Orchestrating On-Demand Multimodal Memory Curation for LLM Agents

Memory has become integral to the LLM agent ecosystem, supporting information retention and reuse across interactions. However, most existing agent memory systems construct memory in a query-agnostic manner, which can incur unnecessary preprocessing cost and discard details that later prove essential. Recent studies have begun shifting memory processing toward runtime adaptation, but typically specialize in particular operations or fixed processing schemes, leaving flexible control over performance, cost, and latency largely underexplored. MedPrune: Topology-Efficient Multimodal Multi-Agent Communication Evolution for Medical VQA Tasks

While medical multimodal large language models (Med-MLLMs) advance medical visual question answering (VQA), existing clinical workflow-inspired multi-agent frameworks suffer from interaction patterns and excessive computational overhead caused by redundant communication topologies. In this paper, we propose MedPrune, an efficient medical multimodal multi-agent collaboration framework that dynamically prunes both nodes and edges from the communication topology to enhance reasoning ability and token efficiency. Specifically, we first formulate the diagnostic process as a heterogeneous communication graph, where nodes represent specialist agents from various departments and edges capture intra- and inter-departmental interactions. One Figure, Every Canvas: Editable Flowchart Relayout via Agentic Pipeline

Pipeline figures in ML papers must be repurposed across many canvases, including paper columns, 16:9 slides, portrait posters, 1:1 social teasers, 9:16 phone previews. Each format imposes a different aspect ratio on the same computational graph, where any silently broken connection misrepresents the method. We formulate aspect-ratio-adaptive flowchart relayout as a distinct task: given a raster flowchart and a target ratio, produce a structurally faithful, hallucination-free, editable layout. TranScope: What the Software Hides About LLM Training Data, the Hardware Reveals at Scale, and Accelerators Magnify

Membership is the root privacy primitive in machine learning: to date, no hardware-based out-of-distribution detection on black-box models has been demonstrated against constant-time, static neural networks with masked confidence. This paper performs the first cycle-level examination of how large language models and vision transformers interact with various modern microarchitecture components, including integrated accelerators, as LLMs scale in size and answers the question of whether the data that a model was trained on affects its execution footprint even without any input-dependent branch, dynamic optimization, or early exit and in constant-time models. The results confirm that the answer is yes and identify which modern hardware components, such as TLBs or on-core accelerators, reveal or amplify that effect. Tight Query Lower Bounds for Quantum Sampling, with an Application to Certified Randomness

Random circuit sampling experiments, the leading demonstrations of quantum computational advantage, are tested with the linear cross-entropy benchmark (XEB), which scores outcomes by their ideal probabilities. We study what a high XEB score certifies about an untrusted quantum device. In the quantum query model, we show that the honest sampler's ideal score acts as a Tsirelson bound for efficient devices and certified randomness. Mind Perception Influences Perceived AI Companionability

Humans increasingly keep company with AI companions, yet whether mind perception (MP) precedes machine companionship remains untested. In a field-sampled experiment, participants received mind-attributive or mind-negating descriptions of an AIC before interacting with and rating its companionability. Baseline skepticism was high; minded primes somewhat reduced skepticism for connective coordination (CC; dyadic co-presence) but not eudaimonic exchange (EE; self-elevating links). Interplay between Excitability and Noise in Analog Spiking Neurons

A spiking neuron is a dynamical system exhibiting a limit cycle (a spike) when subject to sufficiently excitatory input. Famous neuroscience experiments by Bryant and Segundo as well as Mainen and Sejnowski revealed that the spike times of some biological neurons are more reliable when subject to time-varying stimuli compared to constant ones. Provided with an industrial physics-based transient noise SPICE simulation framework compatible with foundry transistor compact models, we have demonstrated similar behaviours for a CMOS analog spiking neuron designed for neuromorphic computing hardware platforms. Paul Loisil's TNY-360 Is an Open-Hardware Espressif ESP32-S3-Powered Robot Dog for Everyone

Developer and computer science student Paul Loisil has launched a second-generation open-hardware DIY quadrupedal robot dog, with which he hopes to make robotics more accessible: the TNY-360 v2. "After almost three years of working on this project alone, I think I finally solved one of the things that bothered me most about getting into robotics: you either get very simple robots, or you quickly end up with something complicated, expensive, and difficult to understand," Loisil claims of the inspiration behind his project. " That desire to offer a fully-featured robot without the complexity resulted in the TNY-360, an open source quadrupedal robot dog powered by an Espressif ESP32-S3 microcontroller — using the chip's two cores to run a segregated architecture in which one core, dubbed "Reflex," is dedicated to kinematics calculations and a closed-loop 200Hz control loop to digital MG996R servos modified for analog feedback running from a custom op-amp buffer PCB, while the other, "Brain," handles orchestration, network connectivity, and the user interface.

GNN-CB: A Graph Neural Network Competition Benchmark for Human and LLM Evaluation

Large language models (LLMs) have demonstrated strong performance on coding and reasoning benchmarks; however, their ability to solve graph-structured machine learning problems remains largely unexplored. In particular, no benchmark currently evaluates whether LLMs can autonomously solve end-to-end Graph Neural Network (GNN) coding tasks under realistic competition settings. To address this gap, this paper introduces GNN-CB, the first competition-based benchmark for evaluating both humans and LLMs on GNN coding tasks. Authors: Murad Hossen, Tasneem Selim, Gurur Gamgam.

Choosing an energy-efficient software architecture for building system diagnostic support

Around 30% of global energy expenditure can be attributed to the building sector, where a large portion of energy-consumption could be avoided by repairing existing faults. Fault detection and diagnosis (FDD) software addresses this issue; however, its creation and operation also have an environmental impact. When Equivalent Quantum Circuits Lose Synthesis Choices

Quantum compilers synthesize high-level operations, such as the quantum Fourier transform and multi-controlled X gates, into gate-level circuits. Across compilation stages, a circuit may be serialized, exchanged as OpenQASM, converted between compilers, or lowered to gates. These representation changes can preserve computation while removing the high-level operation itself, leaving the receiving compiler unable to apply a requested synthesis method.
